A year ago, these Indians were Bangladeshi citizens. A little over a year ago, Bangladesh and India shared one of the most complicated borders in the world; complicated because on either side of the border, were leftover pockets of land (enclaves) that didn't belong to the country it was in. There were Indian patches of land inside Bangladesh, and vice versa. It isn't too difficult to move freely between India and Bangladesh, but even so, how does a citizen in an enclave apply for a passport to do so? How does a government even govern these citizens in another nation? Who would provide these people with basic amenities, and utilities? These were tough questions that both countries didn't have any answers to, till last year when the Land Bills Act was implemented. Both countries swapped these pockets of land, and the 'enclave islands' ceased to exist. Citizens were given a choice – stay back and assume the nationality of the country the enclave was situated in, or go back to their homeland. Most citizens stayed back, and changed their nationalities. We're telling their stories. And the story of Jihad Hussein Obama, a boy from the enclaves whose birth sparked the revolution for the people who lived there.

A historian and conservationist, fittingly named Abraham Benhur, made a startling discovery on his farm in Kerala. Hidden underground were ancient burial chambers unlike anything he had ever seen before. A little bit of digging, both physical and academic, revealed that the tombs on his property could be carbon dated back to the year 300 BC. The burial chambers were arranged in an East-West direction, meaning these could only have been the tombs of ancient Christians or Jews. Since the tombs predated Christianity by a few hundred years, Abraham surmised that these were the remains of one of the Lost Jewish tribes of Israel, which had travelled to India so many centuries ago.

A karaoke music video for an Indian classical bandish in English. As a third generation Indian classical musician, Kiran Phatak never really got the lure of musical genres like Rap, Rock, and Pop. Around 5-6 years back realisation dawned upon him and he concluded that it is the English language that these mostly western musical styles are sung in, that stops him from fully appreciating the music. By way of extrapolation, he also inferred that in order for Indian classical music to become relevant and popular amongst the youth of the world, he would need to sing his Bandishes in their language of choice – English. He promptly penned down around 20-25 Bandishes in English; some of them direct translations of traditional ones and a few originals that tackled modern themes such as smartphones running out of battery and putting an end to the nightly conversations between two lovers.
His first rendition of these English Bandishes was a huge hit and the hall where he performed was houseful. Still, there are lot in the music world who oppose his experiment. They believe that he is destroying their centuries old traditions and want him to put an end to this musical Frankenstein. But Mr. Phatak believes that music is a dynamic art and it needs to continually evolve in order to stay relevant. In his words, ‘If we stop new ideas from flowing into the ocean of sounds then it would slowly dry into a puddle of static, muddy water’.
